Disposable Diaper Dilemma

disposablediaperdilemmaDuring my 5 year stay in Washington state I picked up some hippie ways. I recycle, I use reusable bottles for my water and cups for beverages on the go. Disposable diapers are the epitome of evil where the hippie folks are concerned. I’ve been trying to battle my demons knowing that I have been using disposable diapers for 6 almost 7 months. Hundreds of E’s dirty poo filled diapers are chilling in a landfill and will be practically forever.

I want to change to cloth diapers but I just don’t know if I can stomach the cost. Well not me but the hubs. For subsequent children the cost will be nothing. We can reuse our stash for baby numbers 2 through whatever number we choose to stop at. I’ve been researching for the best way to purchase diapers, and all their accessories. No matter what way I go it still costs at least$300 (from rough calculations) and that’s a big chunk ole change all at once where my boo is concerned. He doesn’t want to go for it all at once (whereas I do). He wants me to purchase a few diapers at a time and slowly the goods and gradually build my stash to full capacity. Then there are the accessories. So many extra things needed to make the cloth diaper experience better and easier.

I figure I need at least 10 diapers to really start (while we have some prior purchased disposables), due to the fact she goes through about 6 or 8 a day. If I only start with 10, I literally will be washing diapers at the end of each day to have cleans for the next morning. I plan on her wearing disposables at night until she’s through the box of size 3s in her closet. I’ve found that the typical stash should be at least 30, that way the poor momma doesn’t have to wash every day more like every 2 or 3 days. I do her laundry that often anyway so it wouldn’t be that much of a change. Then there’s the poop factor. Poop disgusts me in general so the idea of having to shake it out of her diaper, or spray it out and then put poo remnants in my washer. I just don’t know. Yes I have read up on diaper services and I don’t know about those either. I live in an area that has a couple services to choose from, BUT again cost. I would have to pay someone else to wash her poopie diapers, and then she would be wearing a strangers dirty poo diaper. I can’t do that, I need to purchase her some new fresh butt diapers to soothe my mind.

And just like that I have come to the conclusion that I must cloth diaper her bottom. I’m about to go all green and hippie do dah and old school all at once. And so it must be done cloth diapies here we come!

Help me choose! What’s your favorite brand of style of cloth diaper?

  1. I’d do the math (if you haven’t already) of what slowly buying the stash would cost (because you’d still have to most like use disposables vs. buying it all at once. He’s a big numbers guy. Which brand did you decide to go with? Zulily has had two different kinds lately and I was tempted to buy a couple of each to try with Rocky.
